New Yorkers under age 21 will be prohibited from buying semiautomatic rifles under a new law signed Monday by Gov. Kathy Hochul, making the state one of the first to enact a major gun control initiative following a wave of deadly mass shootings.

Hochul, a Democrat, signed 10 public safety-related bills, including one that will require microstamping in new firearms, which could help law enforcement solve gun-related crimes.

Another revised the state's “red flag” law, which allows courts to temporarily take away guns from people who might be a threat to themselves or others.

“In New York, we are taking bold, strong action. We’re tightening red flag laws to keep guns away from dangerous people,” Hochul said at a press conference in the Bronx.

  1. Can’t wait to hear all the governor’s excuses for why these new laws don’t end up making a bit of difference. Although, I’m certain they’ll just blame other states.

    1. @terpy01 population density increases crime. Guns make murder easier. While removing guns from a dense area will not reduce the crime rate to suburban levels, it will decrease the number of murders.

    2. @Jimbo I’m sorry but your just wrong if you go buy city

  2. Sign all the gun laws you want. But as long as you continue to allow career criminals back onto the streets over and over again, nothing will change.

    1. @Kriss Wegemer I assume you’re taking about serial killers that erase one person at at a time that take years to catch. How is this related to mass shooters who obviously want to be caught?

    2. @Marco oh you have a smartphone and live in the age of TVs, you must ignore thousands of years of tradition because you know best right. That definitely isn’t going to ruin your life on a massive scale one day lol.

  3. 300 federal gun laws already in place, close to 20,000 state and local gun laws already in place. What makes you think this new round of rush to judgement legislation will work on the criminals who already break the law?

    1. Do you think the white supremecist Buffalo shooter could have navigated the world of buying an illegal semiauto?

  4. This is just show. The Supreme Court just made a ruling in CA about this same thing and ruled that it is unconstitutional.

    1. @bubble jim yeah I’m pretty sure It was about having a reason in order to obtain a CCW permit for handguns

    2. @bubble jim no, not handguns it was rifles. It was a 2-1 ruling in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Their ruling reversed a lower courts decision not to block the 2019 bill that banned semiautomatic center fire rifles for anyone under 21.

It’s federal law that bans the sale nationwide of handguns to individuals under 21.

    3. Just because Joe Frazier didn’t go down after Ali’s first punch, or second, or third, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth hitting him every time.

  5. Let’s pass a law if it makes little difference in its purpose for passing. we remove the politicians that passes it and remove the law.

    1. You cant legislate away evil… If we could there would be no politicians…

  6. #3 in the nation for strictest gun laws and the highest gun violence.. None of these laws are going to do anything especial the one that you need a license for a semi automatic rifle. We already have that in place.

  7. “Laws come out, and nothing ever changes” almost like criminals will get guns no matter what laws you make.

    1. @Wozo should car manufacturers be held responsible if someone goes out and runs people over?

  8. They say “string of shootings” like there weren’t any shootings or gun laws in New York before.

NYSRPA, you’ve got some more work to do.

  9. Criminals everywhere are turning their guns in because of her stunning and brave leadership! /s

    1. Ok sounds reasonable. We can ignore gun crimes while we figure that out. What’s the timeline on that? Ten years? Fifteen?

    2. @Taylor Manes I spent 7 years working in case management in a state prison, where I dealt directly with thousands of inmates and their families. When it comes to actual violent offenders (as opposed to those in for drug offenses or drunk driving), I’d estimate that approximately 90% came from broken homes. In many cases, one or both of their parents were felons, as well.

Finding them places to parole to was a huge issue, because they aren’t allowed to be in a home with other people who are on probation or parole.

    3. @Jeffrey Gunn I grew up in a broken. home. So did many of my friends. None of us ever committed any crimes unless you count speeding.

    4. @Taylor Manes As did I. I never said that it’s a guarantee of becoming a criminal. But it’s a very clear factor

  10. So when are the government people going to actually go after the issue criminal insanity and remind us again how a new law will force a serial law breaker to actually obey the laws. This is only going to hurt humans that follow the law. We are being ruled by criminals.

  11. The 9th Federal Circuit has already ruled that states can’t raise the age of weapons purchases to 21 years old. Last month they ruled this after California implemented it. The Fourth Circuit also ruled in favor of 18-20 year-olds on this very matter in 2021….

    1. @codeguy112 laws are for poor people the rich just pay the fine to the govt and go about the day

    2. @Somedude 17 Where in God’s name did you get that nonsensical statistic? The reality of mass shootings is far different than you think. The FBI defines a mass shooting as a shooting in which 3 or more individuals are injured or killed by the same shooter(s.) There were 165 such incidents alone last year…in Chicago. If more gun restrictions were the solution, Chicago wouldn’t be the mass shooting capitol of the world. Furthermore, these mass shootings are NOT 18/19 year olds with AR15s. These are gang-related shootings (conducted primarily with illegally-possessed handguns) which go THOROUGHLY unreported by the mainstream media. Therefore, people like you believe totally nonsensical data.

  12. Doing the same things more than once and expecting different results is the definition of insanity!

    1. @Scarecrow Marsh What’s nonsense is suddenly acting like criminals will follow laws.

  13. I guess she doesn’t believe in reading court cases before signing a law that will be cancelled as soon as it hits the court docket.

  14. Let’s make everything 21 years old. No guns, no cigarettes, no alcohol, no driver license, no voting, no military, no loans. It’s been proven time and time again 18 is too young for people to be responsible for themselves and their actions.

  15. “I have never believed that
    additional gun control or
    federal registration of
    guns would reduce crime.
    I am convinced that a
    criminal who wants a firearm
    can get one through illegal,
    nontraceable, unregistered
    sources, with or without
    gun control.
    99
    Sen. Joe liden 1985

  16. When this bill does exactly noting to help the situation can we get rid of everyone involved in writing and presenting it.

  17. SHOULD it be legal to carry SWORDS (and other melee weapons) in public?

IF guns can be carried for self defense, why not other weapons, as well?
