@Jamestib kirk Yeah, Trump continued Obama-era sanctions imposed on Russia after 2014, the Magnitsky Act, and Congress also passed a bill sanctioning 5 Russian oligarchs during Trump’s admin, by which Trump signed extremely reluctantly claiming it was “seriously flawed.” The sheer reason this bill passed congress with such high bipartisan support was because Congress could not trust Trump with Russia and they feared he had ties. “Trump’s” Russia sanctions were not his at all, they were checks on Trump’s association(s) with Russia and Putin himself.
With regards to Biden, he did lax sanctions on some companies initiating the Nordstream 2 project, but he also imposed new sanctions on Russian shipping, ruble-denominated trades, and maintained past sanctions. In all fairness, I’ve went and listened to the whole section of his speech at CPAC.
Trump praising Putin is to contrast him against the “dumb” leadership of Biden and NATO, and he’s unimpressed with the sanctions. He also started his segment with calling the Russian invasion “appalling, an outrage and an atrocity” and extended sympathy for the Ukrainian people. He goes on to observe that under Obama, Putin invaded Crimea and under Biden, Putin invaded the whole country. He says that on his watch, this wouldn’t have happened.
I don’t agree with Trump’s analysis and his ego centrical self praise, but I also do not agree with how CNN is spinning this.
PS – I’m Belgian and war has come to my continent. I hear warplanes flying overhead everyday. We stand with Ukraine.
I cannot stand Trump, but I agree with you that the spin is a bit much. Technically there is intelligence to Putin, of course. Evil people can be very intelligent and educated. Saying that he is smart is not equivalent to praising him.
However, the timing of Trump insisting on it, combined with his previous praise of him, makes it still come across at least somewhat in the way CNN is spinning it. Yeah, someone can be “smart” but why say or emphasize that they are “smart” especially at a time where there are more important things to say about his character and actions.
