One would think that with a modern law like misuse of campaign funds the law would have been written to include consequences for presidential misuse of campaign funds.

@Roger Out I almost missed that slavery part. The war was about taxes. Slavery didn’t enter the debate until Lincoln needed to campaign for a second term. The emancipation proclamation caused a rash of abandoned Union posts and I hate to use this word but to quote Union soldiers directly using their letters written to home by them “I didn’t sign up to free N*ggers”. It had NOTHING to do with slavery. Lee could have won the war. He didn’t want to destroy the Union but he had the Union army on the run and was ready to march on Washington. But he didn’t. They just didn’t want to pay 70% of U.S. taxes. The north had the industry and the money.
