”The Ugly Truth”??? How is it that this is not taught in every school? How is it that people in other countries know about this but Americans don’t? How come no other president has gone there to mark the anniversary? They had to wait 100 years?

A quiet little town with its shops and businesses and a bank, schools, churches – all the normal stuff totally destroy because of LIE. The woman who started it all later admitted that she had lied. Apart from all the shooting, Americans flew over and dropped bombs on fellow Americans. How screamingly sick is that?
Oh look! The racism and bigotry that has crawled out from under stones and is screwing the country NOW also started on a total LIE.

Depends on where you went to school at. I was raised in NC and I remember a half a page in the history books about this. Even that half page was glossed over like it wasn’t a big deal. Later, as an adult, I learned it’s a very big deal!

There WILL be white families living in the area whose grandparents and grandparents resided in Tulsa in 1921 – and maybe took advantage afterwards, by stealing property. Imagine the farmers whose family has owned their farm since 1921 ….
@Richard McKinney From what I’ve read, black families owned many, many farms in the area. They were basically forced to abandon those farms and run for their lives. The farms were sold soon afterwards for a pittance … how that worked legally speaking begs the question of corruption by local and state authorities.

I learned about this genocide over 40 years ago from reading banned books at the underground book store. High school history books fail to teach this. The mainstream media also failed to report it. Everyone should at least read Howard Zinn, expecially, ‘A Peoples History of The United States’. How’d it get this way? Read ‘Lies My Teacher Told Me’.

Not stupid – nobody knows everything, and this was rarely mentioned anywhere. And not everyone spends all their time watching TV. I am a history buff, who even took part, though I had to go with my older cousin, in civil rights marches. I knew all about slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, KKK, Freedom Summer, the murders in Philadelphia, MS but I knew nothing of this until I got a high speed internet connection (DSL) in 2000 and decided to study the history of race in this country even more. They worked hard to whitewash this, and it worked.

Before World War II, Charles Lindbergh typified American heroism with his daring flights, including the first solo transatlantic flight, and his celebration of new technology. He parlayed his fame and heroic stature into a leading role in the America First movement, which opposed America’s entrance into the war against Nazi Germany. In 1939, in an essay entitled “Aviation, Geography, and Race,” published in that most American of journals, Reader’s Digest, Lindbergh embraced something close to Nazism for America:
“It is time to turn from our quarrels and to build our White ramparts again. This alliance with foreign races means nothing but death to us. It is our turn to guard our heritage from Mongol and Persian and Moor, before we become engulfed in a limitless foreign sea.”
The America First movement was the public face of pro-fascist sentiment in the United States at that time. In the twenties and thirties, many Americans shared Lindbergh’s views against immigration, especially by non-Europeans. The Immigration Act of 1924 strictly limited immigration into the country, and it was specifically intended to restrict the immigration of both nonwhites and Jews.
Once again, nationalism, aka fascism, has risen its ugly head in America, in European nations, and in some other countries around the world. The fight of good people against ignorance, the fears that sprout from it, the hate which then blossoms, culminating in the bitter toxic fruit of evil, senseless brutalities and deaths, is a constant, never-ending battle we fear, but it is a battle from which we must never shrink.
In this era, the likes of Toxic Trump and Marginalized Greene have become the face of the new “America First” fascist movement built up over the last four decades by the GOP, Reich-wing plutocrats, demagogues, and media. But, as with Lindbergh, the American people gradually come to recognize their dysfunctional poison and reject it. Most Americans understand, accept, and appreciate that the enduring strength of America is that we are a nation of immigrants and multiculturalism, a “melting pot” where the best ideas rise to the top, and superficial differences are meaningless in the face of our common humanity and purpose. Most Americans want competent leaders who speak truth, who strive to unite, who are not corrupt, who care about them. So, it should come as no surprise that President Biden is already receiving high marks from the public, while Toxic Trump never managed to rise above even a 50% approval rating. Great comment, but too long for most YT attention spans. But you made the correct point that “America First” has ALWAYS meant “White Christian Americans First” and to dive deeper it meant CONSERVATIVE white Christians. It has always been tribalism at its best, by fragile bigots.
Google Tulsa 1921 & there are maps that show the original Greenwood district … you can go to Google Earth and see the same area today. It is evident that what was the business district is occupied by a baseball stadium, a highway, and the OSU Campus. What is the chain of title on this land? Maybe the university could offer tuition-free education to descendants.
This is one of the situations where the internet did some good – at least for me. I was always something of a history buff, and in 2000, with a good internet connection, I decided to look into the history of racism here. I discovered that I knew much less than I thought – including this. I was 38 years old before I every even heard about it. I had never heard the term “Black Wall Street”, nor understood the generational wealth that was destroyed that day. Imagine if the people there had been able to pass their wealth on to their kids for the past 100 years?
