Thirty-eight new police recruits have been enlisted into the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force. Eight (8) female and thirty (8) male officers effective June fifteen have been engaged in orientation activities at the Police Training School in Morne Bruce.
Chief of Police, Cyrille Carrette, said that this addition to the police service brings the compliment of police officers to four hundred and eighty three (483).
He said that this continued injection of human resource into the service will enable the police force to have more officers man the streets.
“The crime fighting situation is not getting better; it is getting worse globally. We have to ensure that we have enough human resource and the attendant equipment to go along with the human resource to deal with the crime fighting efforts in the country.”
In recent years, the Government of Dominica has injected a significant amount of resources in the police force. The Police Chief is encouraged by this trend.
“I have always said that without security there can be no stability. So, for any progress to be made in any country, security has to be taken seriously. I think it is a global phenomenon now where all governments have been increasing security. However, this government has paid particular interest really in security; security has not been placed on the backburner.”
The Chief of Police told GIS News that security has been given due attention by the Roosevelt Skerrit led Administration especially in the area of training.
“We have been given the necessary attention required. I can say that in 2009 and 2010, the Government always kept avenues open for training for police officers when training for other areas in the public service was put on hold due to budgetary constraints.”
The Police Chief says this has impacted positively on the morale of the police, and there has been a significant reduction in crime on the island.
