I remember when they did that in 68. I was 8 years old and I did not know anything about politics yet I felt that was a terrible terrible thing to do. Today I`m 62 and still feel that using your roll representing America it is still un-American to do such a thing. I usually vote for Democrats and I am not a rascist`s. You were there representing the United States of America not yourself or your ideas. He could have done that at a news conference. I strongly feel that is un-American no matter of color. A total disgrace for our country.
Perhaps you could mention Peter Norman the silver medalist on that podium in 1968 and a supporter of the efforts of Tommie Smith and John Carlos and the Olympic Project for Human Rights. He was also treated very poorly when he returned to his home country and denied entry into future competition. Thirty-eight years after the three made history, both Smith and Carlos gave eulogies and were pallbearers at Norman’s funeral.
The silver medalist was Australia athlete Peter Norman. He supported Smith and Carlos and wore a badge ‘Olympic Project for Human Rights’ at the medal ceremony. He too was ostracized by team officials. He was never again picked to compete in a major games. At the Sydney 2000 games, all living Australian Olympic medalists were invited to team Australia events, Norman wasn’t. The US Olympic team invited him to their events.
