I’ve dove off of Conception several times and always had a great time. It’s very sad to hear about this accident.
Conception is owned by Truth Aquatics and is out of Santa Barabra, Cal along with sister boats Truth and Vision.
Do you know if it was a re-fitted crew boat?

@Kwolfx Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! Never go any higher than you want to fall, or further out than you want to swim! Boats should be maintained as well as an aircraft.

It is alful probably the fire woke up crew up stairs while the lower cabin was engulfed in flames.smoke inhalation would have kept the rest of people asleep.
Diving Boat, lots of Oxygen Tanks around, one or more exposed to an ignition source, starting point. Sad, Fire caught on fast. Lucky crew members were awake, to jump for they’re lives. Oxygen,Great source of fuel for rockets,should be treated like possible Bombs.

I’d been on this boat before, and me and my mother are shocked to hear this, thinking it could have been us.
I think I know why the fire was started, and why the crew were the only ones able to flee
Just past the stern, there is an engine room, with the ship’s engine, along with an air compressor and peoples wet/drysuits.(Not to mention jerry cans of gas) The compressor was for refilling used SCUBA tanks after dives, some of which would be filled with a NITROX mix, a mixture of air which contained more oxygen than ambient air at sea level, I believe this and gasoline was the main fuel source for the fire, as oxygen is highly flammable, and there’s a ton of tanks on board.
All of that was stored on the same level (albeit in different parts of the boat) as the area for the 34 passengers to be sleeping, while the bridge (where all the 5 crew members sleep or pilots the boat) had much more distance between them and the engine room. Due to the flammability of compressed, enriched air, I think the fire started all under their noses, and it was far too late before crew noticed and could stop it. The only way to get down to the sleeping area for the passengers was to go behind the bridge, towards the stern (which is probably where the fire was started and fueled) and climb down to the lower deck, which was covered in tanks. Probably not even a chance to get down and warn the passengers
I don’t believe any of this happened in malicious intent, but regardless it is a tragedy.
For those who have been deemed missing, I pray for.

They’re either dead or in the water somewhere waiting to be found. I have many questions as to whether the people were aware of the situation or if the fire engulfed the boat so fast not many could react quickly, and as a result perished..quite sad.

I truly feel bad for the crew members, I hope they never have to read these idiotic comments because I’m sure they are already dealing with survivors guilt.

They were all sleeping below deck and if they awoke at all it was to find the deck aflame… On a Navy ship you can get on the main deck any number of ways but this boat probably only had one hatch to below.
I’m sure having all those o2 tanks on board help fueled the fire
The tanks probably heated to the point of bursting and released oxygen into the burn area.
I believe the crew was topside getting things ready for the day, the divers were sleeping below deck. Depending on where the fire was it blocked the companionway and the portholes were too small for people to escape through them. Those people were trapped, there was nothing the crew could do. The fire was so hot even the responders could not get near it. More will come out but don’t assume the crew just blithely jumped ship leaving people behind to die. I will be interested on what started this fire and where it started.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the passengers sleeping below died of smoke inhalation before the fire became noticeable to the crew above. By then the flames would have made it impossible for the crew to reach the passengers. One has to wonder about the presence of any smoke alarm or flame detecting system aboard.
When’s the last time you were on a boat with smoke detectors? Maybe on a cruise ship. Not a 70′ dive boat
How in the hell can you not find 34 people twenty yards from shore?… doesn’t pass the smell test.
