Under Oath: See The NRA Chief Own Himself On Background Checks | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

Ari Melber probes the NRA’s gun safety flip flop and how NRA chief Wayne Lapierre once supported background checks after the Columbine shooting, saying it was ‘reasonable to provide mandatory instant criminal background checks.’ The special report also reveals how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also once supported background checks and years later switched his vote to no, matching the NRA’s position.

    1. I agree & sadly, the same could be said of _some_ Trump supporters & legislators. To clarify, I’m referring specifically to those who consistently parrot &/or defend *everything* Trump does & says, regardless how childish, erroneous, dangerous, or un-American.

Based solely on what I’ve seen, his speech & actions have recently escalated from absurd & embarrassing to frightfully dangerous.

I’m genuinely concerned about his mental state. I say this with a heavy heart as an American, not as a partisan or “never Trumper.”

PS. Thank you for voicing your opinion without stooping to childish name-calling & hateful vitriol. There’s far too much of that in comment sections & media, IMHO.

      Best wishes,
      Rebecca

    2. rrbaggett7 : They appear to be using power for power’s sake, at this point? America, including its gun owners, WANTS Background Checks. I own guns. I WANT Background Checks

    3. Terry Daktyl : And, they’re fleecing their members. They’re a money laundering outfit, helping Putin to DIVIDE America. They’re a MENACE to society. I speak as a gun owner, without exaggeration

  1. Things are bad when you reminisce about how great things were under GWB, where prisoners were being tortured at Gitmo and Abu Ghrab, Cheney was bankrolling off his connection to Halliburton and we were lied into a disastrous war. The Trump administration corruption makes GWB and Nixon look like choir boys.

  2. “A lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the 2nd amendment”- DJT
Translation- “Pay me and I will dance, I’m open for business”

    1. THEY ALREADY GAVE HIM $30+ MILLION TO GET ELECTED & THAT’S WHY THEY’RE ALSO UNDER INVESTIGATION TOO HERE IN NEW YORK STATE BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL LETITIA JAMES!! I HOPE SHE FINDS ALL KINDA DIRT ON WAYNE LAPIERRE & THE NRA TOO!!💯😈😈🆗✌😎

    2. @sweetboo1022 I AIN’T YELLING FOOL I’M TYPING, DON’T READ IT *IF YOU’RE SENSITIVE, OKIE DOKIE, YOU AIN’T AFFECTING MY BREATHING NONE!!🦁🦁✊😎💯💪🗽🌉🌉🗽✌😂😂😂😂😂*

  3. To me this is a simple fix that never gets discussed. Reverse the corporate personhood act and make lobbying illegal! Not sure why people think that they can stop the influence of the NRA without stopping the influence of Big Oil, Big Pharmaceutical, the Big Banks and weapon manufacturers.

    1. It’s not simple. It would take a conditional amendment to reverse citizens united. This requires 3/5ths of states to ratify it

    2. @Derek I understand that, mostly pointing out the frustration that no one really discusses the true root of the problem. Sadly you’re correct we would literally have to elect a lot of politicians who refuse corporate money before any of this could happen. However there will be little to no gun legislation passed until this happens and I’m mostly just angry that MSM ignores this issue completely. I still have hope for the three major networks but it’s a uphill battle because most of their profits come from selling advertising slots to these same companies.

    1. @Ian Olson Well, I’ve been a gun owner for 40 years and I am very much in favor of stricter gun control laws.

  4. “A lot of people put me where i am” and do not like gun control ? Or so i can’t do any thing about it because they will take my Money Train away ?

  5. “The National Rifle Association has rallied gun owners — and raised tens of millions of dollars — campaigning against the threat of a national database of firearms or their owners. But in fact, the sort of vast, secret database the NRA warns of already exists, despite having been assembled largely without the knowledge or consent of gun owners. It is housed in the Virginia offices of the NRA itself. The country’s largest privately held database of current, former, and prospective gun owners is one of the powerful lobby’s secret weapons, expanding its influence well beyond its estimated 3 million members and bolstering its political supremacy.

  6. Well, of course 45 has to do what the NRA says. He needs to do everything he can to stay in office because once he is out of office, it’s *Indictment Time!* Thank you SDNY for finally looking into this criminal that you let slide for so long! Until then, 45’s fellow grifters have him by the shorthairs.

  7. *If we end Citizens United, we end the largest part of political corruption. The gun control approval rating for all these years clearly demonstrates how so many republicans have no interest in executing the will of the people, but for executing their own selfish interests of power and money, exactly what Jesus said was evil, as republicans claim to be Christian.*

    1. David Grover Whaat? Oh, please explain why you’d like to drive another person out of this country just because he is planning on not renewing his membership to the NRA? I mean really I want to know why you’d say a thing like that ! Can you explain how it is the NRA is helping any of its members?
Sorry I’m not a member. I do not believe that just because I own guns I have to give my hard earned money over to a gun club. Help me understand.

    1. leftinthirdgrade, Moral judgement from a supporter of the “Democratic” Party that gave the U.S. the Trail of Tears, Mormon Extermination Order, Utah War, Civil War, the KuKlux Klan, Jim Crowe, Oppression of Catholics and Irish immigrants, Segregation, Japanese Internment, Waco Massacre, and Fast and Furious murders/scandal to start the list.
      Is awfully funny.

  8. let’s also talk about why ppl like mitch and wayne are still in congress and at the top of the nra after 20 whole freaking years!!!… they need to GO!!

    1. Let’s keep it real people ,only Moscow Mitch is the only Congress person here not Wayne, but it does make you wonder h ow they both manage to stay a top of the game for so long.

    1. Hang in there… we’re going to fix it. The first step is to kick Trump out of office and lock him up. The next step is to vote against every Republican, in every single election, for the rest of our lives.

    2. @Tessmage Tessera sounds good people so let’s hop to it get out the vote oh and John wood understand how you feel but it’s better than living in the middle east.
