All Barr did (in relation to Stone) was make a sentence recommendation. Nothing uncommon about that. The sentencing is up to the judge. All this big freak out is an exaggeration. The real reason for the freak out is that all prosecutions which stemmed from the Mueller investigation are in danger of being tossed out because the origin was the illegal FISA warrants.

Stone had a real attitude during his trial. He openly defied the courts and basically thumbed his nose at the justice system, and so it will be extremely damaging to the justice system if he gets off lightly.This will send a strong signal to everyone that you should not cooperate in any way if you are brought up on charges, and you can do whatever you like to publicly lower the status and gravity of the courts. His sentence should be on the high side, and not on the low side.
