PRIME MINISTER SKERRIT TO CHAIR 65TH MEETING OF ECCB MONETARY COUNCIL

Roseau, Dominica – July 8, 2009……. Dominica’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Social Security, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit will chair the 65th Meeting of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank when the Finance Ministers of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union meet in Roseau, Dominica on Friday,                 July 10, 2009.

 

In a brief handing-over ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel on Friday morning, beginning at 9am, Dominica’s Finance Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit will accept the chairmanship from the outgoing chairman, Hon. Harold Lovell, Minister of Finance, the Economy  and Public Administration of Antigua and Barbuda.

 

The chairmanship is rotated among the members annually. The last time Dominica chaired the Monetary Council of the ECCB was in 2001.

 

The Monetary Council will address the ECCU Eight Point Stabilisation and Growth Programme as the established collective response to the current global economic and financial crisis.

 

The Council will also receive the Governor’s report on monetary and credit conditions and will provide directives and guidelines to the Bank, as mandated by the ECCB agreement, 1983, which governs the operations of the Central Bank.

 

The Monetary Council, which is the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s highest decision-making body, meets three times a year.

 

Also in attendance at the 65th Meeting of the Monetary Council will be the Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Sir. K. Dwight Venner.
