Kirstjen Nielsen pressed on child separations, reveals why she resigned

Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she left office because "saying no" and refusing to do things that others in the administration wanted was "not going to be enough." Her comments came towards the end of an intense and brief interview with Amna Nawaz, national correspondent for "PBS NewsHour," which focused primarily on Nielsen's controversial role in the separation of families at the border.

  1. Damn…I don’t think Nielsen really knew the caliber of interviewer she was walking into. Respect Amna Nawaz.

    1. @Mind Freshener Except you just lied to make a dumb point. But you got to justify your WeakWhyte racist mentality.

    2. @Donavon dee Since when is seeking asylum illegal. Oh wait, at $775/day for each kid…its a legit business for Evangelist Christian Terrorst like you Southern in bread hucklefvcka.

    3. @StocktonNative 209 time for the US to focus on its citizens and not others for a while. it’s not illegal to seek Asylum it’s illegal to try to come over the border illegally which most of them are doing with their kids. And I’m not a Christian and I’m not from the south.

    4. For the purpose of clarification, is it that you’d prefer that the laws not be enforced at all? Or would you prefer that children be held in detention together with their parents?

    1. But don’t you ever get tired of listening to politicians talk and talk and talk, without ever answering the question? It drives me crazy.

Edit: Not even as a right vs left thing, just as a politician vs normal human thing.

    1. @Ash Roskell CNN and their lawyers defending Rachel Madcow and the lawsuit filed against them admitted that they are opinionated talking points and not real news. It’s the defense they are using to try to get a major lawsuit dropped against CNN and Rachel Madcow. They are admitting they are FAKE NEWS!!!

    2. @Damon Thomas Your statement is stupid (tourism? Trade? diplomacy?) It’s legal to cross the border at legal ports of entry. These people were legally seeking asylum. They were fleeing gun violence (caused by americans running guns to gangs in the area). They were fleeing crushing poverty, inflicted by the puppet dictator installed by americans. Now you have these poor desperate people locked in cages in what appears to be a slave market.
Taxpayers are paying $750/day per person to have them treated as inhumanely as possible, for the crime of hoping for a better life. The fact that you support these concentration camps makes you a fascist. They are not your problem. They are only the scapegoats that the GOP point to because they are trying to divide americans. left against right, black against white, christian against muslim, men against women, murcans against foreigners. The 0.1% want you to fight each other so you don’t realize they have all the money.

    1. @Sharon Checkel The gross misrepresentation of the only people actually working to fix this humanitarian crisis is why most people do not take the arguments of the left on this issue seriously. You break the law, you go to jail, your kids do not follow you. That’s not what we do with American felons, that’s not what we’re going to do with illegal immigrants. The sooner you realize that the easier it will be for you in the future.

    2. The parents put those children in cages by illegally entering the country. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

    3. “Democrats routinely and inaccurately blame Trump for creating โ€œcagesโ€ for children. They are actually referring to chain-link fencing inside the McAllen center โ€” Obamaโ€™s creation.” AP News – sucks, but separation isn’t new and neither is illegal crossing prosecution.

Section 1325 of the U.S. Code – “Section 1325 sets forth criminal offenses relating to (1) improper entry into the United States by an alien, (2) entry into marriage for the purpose of evading immigration laws, and (3) establishing a commercial enterprise for the purpose of evading immigration laws.” – U.S.C. 1326 — REENTRY AFTER DEPORTATION (REMOVAL) – “[felony] offense for any alien who has been denied admission, excluded, deported, or removed, or has departed the United States while an order of exclusion, deportation or removal is outstanding and thereafter enters, attempts to enter, or is at any time found in the United States”

      2005- DHS Operation Streamline
_Under Operation Streamline, such persons were to be rounded up to undergo criminal prosecution in United States district courts, serve jail sentences (usually under one year), and then be deported. The initiative was jointly run by the Department of Homeland Security (in the form of the Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agencies) and the Department of Justice (by way of U.S. Attorneys and district courts along the border).

One feature of Operation Streamline is that immigrants are often processed en masse rather than in separate criminal cases. In 2014, a U.S. District Court judge in Tucson, Arizona, told the New York Times that he had once processed 70 individuals (the most the jail cells adjacent to the courtroom could accommodate) in one 30-minute session. Most defendants pled guilty to illegally crossing the border in order to obtain a shorter prison sentences._ ~ Snopes

  2. Sessions said,
that family seperation was being used as a deterrent in his speach laying out the zero tolerance policy.
    before its implementation.

    He was clear and precise.

    Still lying i see.

    1. She ignores why migrants want to leave (poverty). As the planet heats-up along with damage to our ecosystems and the BILLIONAIRE RADICAL RIGHT wants more economic inequality (make em poorer), the numbers of people migrating will increase. If the USA helped American Hemisphere countries develop their economies and dealt with global climate change and controlled the BILLIONAIRE RADICAL RIGHT, the number of migrants would drop significantly.

    2. @Dan you and your like minded travelers ignore the victimization of children, and crime that hurts legal immgrants and American citizens. People escaping poverty have come to America legally through an immigration system that could be fixed, but of course Democrats in congress created the law that seperates children from their families, and wont do anything to fix the system which will allow people escaping poverty to more easily become American citizens. Congratulations….you idiots will probably vote for failure in 2020, would you like a participation trophy?

    3. @Betta Blue
      Yes,never said she didnt,
But she didnt make a huge televised announcment detailing the implementation of the zero tolerence policy.
      Also,
No ones laid all the cards on the table at once, as sessions did in that speech.

Why search for obscure neilson comments, when i can cite the sessions speach,
      Which precedes it all.

    1. Maga make America great again we love Trump and it’s going to piss you off even more when he wins by a landslide in 2020

    1. I’m watching it right now and I was just thinking the same thing. She’s not really answering any questions.

    1. Amellia Mendel maybe the fact that he proposed logging half of the 16 1/2 million acre Tongass national park in Alaska, which happens to be the largest temperate rainforest in North America. It has not so much as a single road ,is pristine ,untouched and Trump wants to destroy it so he can claim the economic benefit. He commandeered Bears Ears national Park to turn into an industrial wasteland, the first president to ever destroy a national Park. He has rolled back all the environmental protections that Obama put in place to reduce carbon emissions. He thinks the noise from Wind turbines causes cancer and that climate change is a Chinese hoax. If that is who you want to support, I hope you have a good explanation for your children or your grandchildren and a reason for the environmental legacy that you will be leaving them. I get it, you donโ€™t care about the environment but future generations do. Trump is morally bankrupt but my biggest concern is for this planet. More people need to consider the consequences of his actions. Most presidents leave a legacy of creating a national Park, Trump destroys them.

    1. I thought I was there only one these saw that smerk… She doesn’t regret it she probably enjoys watching this horrendous act go through.

  3. “Let me just thank you for letting me make excuses for my inhumanity in advance of answering any difficult questions”

    1. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Exactly, inhumane people with no conscience…

  4. The legendaryย “Witch of the South” still pretending that the broom she flies on belongs to Congress. Lol.

  5. Itโ€™s ironic that her first words were โ€œwe should work together and not tear people apartโ€๐Ÿ˜

    1. @Quentin Beckwith I will not speak to specifics as to why any individual or family would choose to stay in a facility versus returning to their home country or Mexico (if not the same- as I am guessing that they have a choice to return there, really. But I was unfamiliar with that choice being an option in these cases- I’ll take your word for it).
I did see large “cages” made of fencing on the news over the summer though where some people were being kept. Children did die in our care, at least one from nothing more than dehydration after a couple days in custody. BOTTOM LINE FOR ME:
As a nation I believe we can show much more humanity than this administration

    2. @Blueskin Blake What would you suggest as to show more humanity to the asylum system? The system and it’s rules are what are being abused. We were averaging over 70,000 individuals detained per month. Just for an example to the gravity of that number, on D-Day the American and Allied forces released roughly 70,000 troops onto the beaches. Our country was receiving a “D-Day sized invasion” of immigrants seeking asylum per month. How would you expect to house that many individuals? So, again, I ask, “What could you do to improve the system of legal migration while allowing the citizens of that nation to feel safe and trusting that they are not letting individuals in that are intending to do harm to the citizens?”

    3. Very forgotten here.. is that all 8 Years of Obama these were the SAME laws he used fully for all 8 of those years.. But the very corrupt left”..as well as fake media such as cnn made it all of a sudden a right law!! Lol you people are so blind and this is why this country is so divided!!

  6. “one person being exploited is too much”

If only she and her party would think the same about mass shootings…
