Dow dives as trade war with China escalates

A dramatic escalation of the trade war between the United States and China sparked a worldwide sell-off in markets on August 5. The Dow closed down 767 points, and the Nasdaq Composite — a proxy for the technology companies that will be most harmed by a trade war — suffered its longest losing streak since November 2016.

  1. Whatever Trump tries to say, WE pay for the tariffs. It’s a tax on IMPORTS that get passed on to the consumer.

    1. devaluing their currency means they will have less money for commerce with the USA. only the American Consumer is going to pay for Trump’s Tariff War.

    2. if you are buying from china then you are fucking up the economy with there crap keep the money in the country doofus.

    3. @James Zamow – Cents on the dollar X how many Billions? This will add up to Billions passed onto the consumer.

  2. “we love trump because he is destroying our economy, our society, our planet and our allies!!” MAGA!!!

    1. @Sho Shayda Dont mind if I do thank you very much. Care if I do ur dosage for u also so I do what 2 of us do in a sitting. Thank you.

    2. @Axios .king Um whataboutism is whataboutism and I’m not defending bill Clinton you are defending trump. Do trump supporter’s understand hypocrisy ….I’m being serious. You couldn’t defend trump and instead of just admitting he has that baggage you bring up bill because you couldn’t defend trump and you sure as hell can’t hold him to the moral standards you hold Dems too.

    1. @Axios .king I have three different channels..I use Elmo because my grandchildren love him.
You can report me for this-

If you made a child molestation jokes to my face I would rip your heart out and slap you with it before you dropped.

    2. @Elmosweed I’m just saying liberals are creepers…. You never know…. You people are the ones promoting 12 – 25 year old topless pool partys with no parent attendees….. So it wouldn’t surprise me if you never had grandkids all….

    1. @P Nomis Australia has been exempt from the tariffs, as far as I know. Doesn’t change the fact I’ve been making plenty of money from it.

    2. @timber_beast Just made 6.3% today on Lynas Corporation LTD. I made thousands of dollars since you made you comment.

    1. please elaborate. what is the nature of said ‘tsunami’ ? Global Economic MeltDown or just America taking a hit in the balls? you really need to refine your ”Fear Mongering”.

    2. Oh jes, and soon we all have to watch that “Duck and Cover” nonsens again haha. I hope you all had your Starbucks frappuccino enema because who is going to run around without light protection factor 2.000.000 will have a really crappy day. And everything in the name of free KABOOM

  3. All this because 45* doesn’t understand anything about the adult world. Most manufacturing jobs have been lost to automation, not trade. And they’ll never come back.

Also, I should add, the only way for those who lost their jobs to automation to acquire new good jobs is to reeducate them. And guess who’s pushing for affordable or free college and training? Only dems.

    1. @Jose reyes Yes, I’m glad you can type a few words into Google. I suggest you research your topic heavier before trying to pass it off as facts. A simple Google search doesn’t make you an expert on the subject. China lowered the definition of poverty to less than $1.90 USD. It used to be higher. By lowering the definition, they could claim they took millions out of poverty. If they lowered the definition of poverty to less than 10 cents a day, they could say they took virtually everyone out of poverty without having to do a single thing. Of course manufacturing jobs did lower poverty, not denying that, but you’re only bringing up half the facts. “They took 850 million” like you’re some state run media for the CCP. Like I said, look heavier into it before claiming to try to educate anyone, it only makes you look like a fool.

And to answer your other comment which I only just read, can’t blame me for trying to avoid what seemed so blatantly a CCP state run media comment, yes Dan better go to school and learn a new trade. Otherwise he’s going to stay with a company that will eventually file for bankruptcy and won’t pay any severance, like so many coal companies did just this year. It’s Dan’s choice. And if YOU can’t see that, you’re as disingenuous as Republican leaders.

    2. Jose reyes oh and he’s going to bring coal back to right china did start to change their economy with its people doing the manufacturing but not anymore they are turning to automation to just read a article about Chinese workers starting to feel the strain from robotic automation china is spending lots of money to automate their facilities also they talked about a guy who quite his job spent his own money to go to school to learn to be a automation engineer so yes a lot of jobs aren’t coming back in the USA and in China too so yes affordable or free college and training does sound good if you want to continue to work and provide for your family at any age they are already working on self driving trucks to haul all the products made by robots the writing on the wall adapt or get left behind

    3. @Jose reyes kinda hard to make a profit when American factory workers are more expensive than foreign factory workers.

    4. Alex S Alex S no need to call names or say I’m getting paid by China or whatever it is you were saying. China has used manufacturing to unprecedented growth. That’s not propaganda, those are facts. If you’re going to argue against China becoming the second biggest economy and, probably, the worlds largest economy due to manufacturing -you’ll lose that argument any day. You’re probably using something “made in China” right now.

Maybe if The Obama administration and the dems would have spent a little less time on Solyndra (RIP 😂)and a little more time on making sure Dan, and the millions like him, keep his job, they might not be seen as the anti-American party. Maybe coal WAS out the door but President Obama shoved it out and then dems have the audacity to say “tough luck, learn to code”? It’s not a “choice” when you grow up in a rural part of the country and all you have AND all your friends have AND all your town has is coal or the like. Those are salt-of-the-earth people And they have a vote too. As I’m sure you witnessed.

  4. Video games are to blame for the sudden change in the stock market I just wanted everyone to know

    1. Jeff Cooper : China, of ALL countries, can take hit after hit. They don’t have elections to worry about, and their people are SO indoctrinated, they will starve with grins on their faces, before they even START to grumble. Trump’s SUCH a f**king IDIOT . . . Smh

    2. MilkCow : WTF does that even MEAN, dumbass? Why do you LIVE on CNN, if you don’t like the News? What a CRETIN 😆
