Greg Moonen, perhaps that the person saying them does *not* know what totalitarianism looks like? Donald Trump once said (something like) he could shoot someone in broad daylight and get away with it. Well he could also decapitate a hundred more, and pee on 1000 yet more, and Americans _still_ wouldn’t know what totalitarianism looks like. (Of course such things might mean they are careening down a road that will *lead them* to such knowledge, but it would still be some ways off.) Personally I have little doubt that Trump would be a good candidate for becoming a totalitarian leader. His sheer incompetence would be a problem, but I think he probably has the core brutality and fragile/massive ego needed to work around him being a complete twit. But he still would have to get past the machinery of the USA as a (fairly) free, (kinda) democratic, and (pretty-) well-constructed nation state. And while we can certainly hear some of the bolts squeaking a little, and occasionally a wee cogwheel flies off making us think, “WTF — surely that must have been needed for something!?”, so far it’s holding up. This is America. Not Idi Amin’s Uganda.
