Dominica Employment & Small Business Support Agency Gets High Commendations from Minister for Education and Human Resource Development

ceremony1Roseau, Dominica – Friday, September 5, 2014 – Minister for Education and Human Resource Development and Parliamentary Representative for the LaPlaine Constituency Honourable Petter Saint Jean has commended the Dominica Employment & Small Business Support Agency, DESBSA for their role in employment creation in Dominica. Minister Saint Jean was at the time addressing the launching of a six-week hospitality programme in the east at the Waitikubuli National Trail Research and Interpretive Facility in Pond Casse on Thursday, September 4, 2014.

The Education Minister stated that the DESBSA has not only focussed on job creation but has also developed the human resource capacity so as to make young people more suitable for the job market.

“When you hear people talking of employment creation as if it’s the move of a magic wand, the Dominica Employment and Small Business Agency is that vehicle that is really creating true employment for Dominican youth. Not people speaking some pie in the sky figures as far as employment creation is concerned. And through this unit what we are now seeing, there is a focus on skill development for our young people. And I can speak to that because I have seen in the LaPlaine Delices area in excess of thirty-two (32) young people who have been productively engaged through this agency over the past six months. Well if that is not employment creation somebody must tell me what is,” Minister Saint Jean stated.

The DESBSA is a unit of the Ministry of Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs. The unit is charged with the responsibility of implementing government’s policy with respect to the micro and small business sector by delivering a suite of integrated and strategic projects and programmes which will improve this sector.
