Dominica airport welcomes night operations for first time; only small planes allowed

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) – Upgrades at an airport on the tiny Caribbean island of Dominica mean planes can take off and land by night for the first time.

Aviation Minister Rayburn Blackmore says he expects a boost to tourism.

For now, only small aircraft will be allowed to land at the Melville Hall airport until 10 p.m.

The head of the Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority says he expects the airport will receive clearance for larger aircraft within the next six months.

Benoit Bardouille says the European Union, Venezuela and the local government paid for more than $100 million in airport upgrades.

Officials say a Windward Islands Airways plane landed there late Monday.
