Rachel Maddow looks at how Senator Bernie Sanders' confidence and assertiveness in the Democratic debates so far have shut down some common lines of criticism against him, and how Andrew Yang's unique framing of the issues distinguished him from the rest of the field.

    1. OG BillBob : Unfortunately, real leadership does require the ability to think well on your feet, keep a good poker face when things get stressful, and convince your opponents that you aren’t coming at them aggressively even if you kind of are. Negotiating skills overlap greatly with acting skills, and ultimately, a better actor will be perceived by the average human as being the more desirable candidate. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills are part of the “performance”, but they are also absolutely vital to diplomacy. I do agree with you, however, that the current debate structure is terrible for the candidates and the American people; sadly, I can’t think of another structure that would give the lesser-known candidates as much coverage with such a wide audience.

    2. @ErykaSoleil A better solution for our current debate structure should be the DNC hosting and moderating the debates with all the networks being invited to air them. It shouldn’t be the other way around. The networks are driven by ratings first and foremost, and have too much power setting the agenda, which often comes at the expense of the American people. The current structure is such that if you’re not well known, then your ideas aren’t worth promoting. The debate stage is where ideas need to be tested and proved. Instead, it’s all about who can reel off the best one-liners and better attack someone else’s character. These are frivolous attributes and I would suggest the American people would have a much stronger appetite for intelligent conversation. But as long as we’re championing those who are best at grandstanding, then conversation we NEED to have will never be had.

  1. OBSERVATION: Andrew Yang posses an “Aikido” intellect. He can take any attack or opposition & resolve or neutralize it without having to inflict injury. I’ve witnessed this time & time again. BRILLIANT in technique & in thought. (Aikido – A peaceful, Japanese martial art.)

    1. Indeed, apart from liking his political positions, I find myself puzzling over how this man came to exist. I wish that I could be more like him.

    1. WHENEVER HE MAKES IT INTO THE TOP 5 MAYBE IT WILL BUT HE’S NEVER BEEN THAT CLOSE!!🆗✌😂😂😂😂😂

    1. Rachel might learn something from that interview, but her viewers wouldn’t be able to learn much from her questions. Rachel is obviously completely clueless on this topic. Let her first read “The War On Normal People”, then she might start to get a clue.

  2. I love Bernie and canvassed for him in 2016. But now I support Yang. The arguments that Bernie and his supporters make that “We’ve been saying the same thing for decades” when our economy is rapidly changing doesn’t make any sense. Neither Bernie or Warren seem to understand (at least they haven’t said anything real) about the automation of jobs. So tell me Bernie supporters, how is $15 minimum wage going to help fast food workers when they’re being replaced by machines?

    1. I’m sorry sweetie, but the jobs we need for the Green New Deal cannot be automated. They’re hands on and location specific. Lesser jobs will become automated and so what? There are millions more that are still coming on board.

Bernie gets it. Automate the dumb jobs. We’ll need millions of highly skilled workers for infrastructure to save the planet.

    2. Shashwat mishra That’s a lie! Bernie has plans for a complete transformation of the nation. It’s going to take millions of highly skilled workers to complete a totally new infrastructure.

    3. 360Rumors Would you stop denigrating $15 minimum wage? It isn’t Bernie’s only plan; it’s something that needs to happen yesterday. Minimum wage pushes up everyone’s wages.

Millions of jobs will be created by the Green New Deal. Machines can’t do them. Machines can’t do child care and home health care. Machines will do what they have already started to do.

    4. MF Jake I would never vote for Yang if he were the last candidate on the face of the planet. He would make poor seniors even poorer and the same with the disabled who rely on home care and cannot give it up for your bandaid on capitalism.

Just stop calling Bernie 20th century because you don’t know a thing about economics. Yang has you little capitalists so bamboozled.

  3. I’m going with Yang. He understands the need of vocational school and not everyone needs to go to college. Freedom dividend is better than increase in minimum wage. I used to feel the Bern, but no longer.

    1. Jallow Uber Trade schools are covered by Bernie’s plans. These Yang trolls are trying to confuse people and get them away from supporting Bernie. That way the chosen candidate will be Biden or Warren.

    2. @Ron Corpuz Yang is _not_ Bernie 2.0. He is still hanging on to a foundation of billionairs ruling like kings and queens. He is just trying to put a band-aid on a system that has been failing us since the 18th century. A system that only worked during the time it was modified by the original *New Deal.* Those were the golden 1950’s and swinging 1960’s. Even the 1970’s were still better than what we have today. But then we destroyed Keynsian Capitalism, and with it the middle class.

And inbetween: If you call the suggestions that algorithms that make your browser pull you into this or that bubble “artificial intelligence”, then you might want to rethink your definition of what constitutes as _intelligence._ Yes, automation 4.0 might be around the corner, but any scientist in the field (who’s not on LSD) will tell you: AI is nowhere to be found.

    3. @Bob Rolander You know that just about to pass Cory Booker and Beto in the polls and will more than likely pass Pete Buttigieg after the 3rd Debate, putting him in 5th

    4. @Bob Rolander How is he still hanging on to billionaires? His plan is to help the American people struggling to thrive in our economy

  4. Thank you, Rachel. That was informative. Now next week, keep pulling papers out of the hat, until the hat is empty.

  5. Yang is the only one talking about the most important issues he country is facing today. Hope to see Rachel interview him soon!

  6. Yang 2020! So much better than the rest that they should bring back the kiddie table and have them sit there.

  7. It’s about what they can do for America, not what good they can do for themselves! America needs Andrew Yang!

    1. Bill S nice! I’m converting my friends parents who are visiting from Wisconsin! They seem really into yang 😄
